Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis

About the book

Jim Dixon has accidentally fallen into a job at one of Britain’s new red brick universities. A moderately successful future in the History Department beckons. As long as Jim can survive a madrigal-singing weekend at Professor Welch’s, deliver a lecture on ‘Merrie England’ and resist Christine, the hopelessly desirable girlfriend of Welch’s awful son Bertrand.

Review by U3A Book Circle 3 Reading group:

Three in the group really enjoyed it. The rest found it ‘boring’ . Students of the period appreciated it but we didn’t think it would appeal to the younger generation. Characters very well drawn and the whole book had great literary merit.

This book was a more enjoyable read than we expected. We didn’t find it very amusing, but it gave an insight into a redbrick university in the late 1940’s – early 1950’s. Partnering, little choice in clothing and household goods and etiquette. all very important in day to day life of the time.

A bit outdated now – but Amis is very clever with the use of language. The introduction by David Lodge was well worth reading. All in our book group were teenagers at the time of writing this book.

The majority of the group did not enjoy it as thet felt the characters were flat and unlikeable. They didn’t find it funny. I did like it and laughed out loud in places. It is a book you have to read thoroughly and get to the end because it is worth it!

Divided opinion. Those who enjoyed it really admired the writing, characters and humour. Those who didn’t enjoy it found it puerile and unreadable.
