Case Histories by Kate Atkinson

About the book

Cambridge is sweltering, during an unusually hot summer. To Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet – Lost on the left, Found on the right – and the two never seem to balance. Jackson has never felt at home in Cambridge, and has a failed marriage to prove it. Surrounded by death, intrigue and misfortune, his own life haunted by a family tragedy, he attempts to unravel three disparate case histories and begins to realise that in spite of apparent diversity, everything is connected…

The book was well received. Wonderful characters. Unusual plot. Red herrings caused surprise. A little too much explicit sex.

An intriguing read. Clever interweaving of cases, linked by a sympathetic private detective. A book for re-reading and dipping into. Always a new view on the story. Looking forward to meeting Brodie in her new novel.

Appreciation of Case Histories benefits greatly from reading group discussion. Understanding the complicated webs of characters calling for more concentration than most books receive at a single reading. Several members of the group had read the book twice and after the discussion others felt they wanted to read the book again. Although the episodic start to the book made it difficult to get into and get hooked on, most people found that the sub-plots did draw them along. The theme of loss underlying each case history produced characters all of whom had a degree of sadness in their lives. We left this book with the sense that there was more to be unearthed. Not an easy read, but a good read.

An intricately woven, complex novel combining 3 case histories full of suspense and charged with emotion. The type of novel to re-read straight away – which is what soem of our members did.
