Maggie Gee deals sensitively with racism from the perspective of the perpetrators. Beautifully written, the White Family is taken apart and stripped bare. A powerful novel, well worth reading.

Rather mixed views but provoked an interesting discussion on all the issues raised in the book. Some found it predictable but others excellent and engrossing.

  4. Review by New Forest/Waterside U3A Reading Group:
The group considered ‘The White Family’ a book worth reading and recommending. An allegory using the Victorian symbol of The Park as the good society, throws a strong light on some social changes in progress in Britain today. The characters are well drawn and believable though not all admirable. As one reader put it ‘I did not enjoy the book but i did enjoy reading it.’ Maggie Gee uses the technique of devoting separate chapters to individual characters skillfully and to commendable success. It generated a very vigorous discussion.

Not a book to read for pleasure but very thought provoking; most of us thought is was a worthwhile read. Well written, good insight into degrees of racism and possible causes.
