About the book
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a murder mystery novel like no other. The detective, and narrator, is Christopher Boone. Christopher is fifteen and has Asperger’s Syndrome. He knows a very great deal about maths and very little about human beings. He loves lists, patterns and the truth. He hates the colours yellow and brown and being touched. He has never gone further than the end of the road on his own, but when he finds a neighbour’s dog murdered he sets out on a terrifying journey which will turn his whole world upside down.

The book was generally appreciated. Three in the group had experience with children and the syndrome, with varying degrees of approval as to how Mark Haddon presented it. An enlightening book.

Easy to read book. We all learnt a lot about what it is like living with Asperger’s. Three people had experience of children with the condition. One said that Christopher’s behaviour was exactly like that of the boy she knows. Christopher’s ability with mathematics contrasts sharply with his inability to understand other people’s feelings. We were impressed with what Siobhan had taught him – rules and strategies to help him to cope. The contrast between his mother’s and father’s reactions were noted. We liked the sketches and diagrams as his way of explaining things. An outstanding book for all in our group.

The general view was that this book gave a good insight into a mind set that the majority had no experience of. The killing of the dog was never explained but was the ‘excuse’ for the story line and added to the mysterious quality. It also showed the relationship with the father and dependence on him by Christopher. A good read.

Very cleverly written and informative about Asperger’s. Page turner, but as it is the third book we have read on this subject – we are suffering from autism/Asperger’s overload!!
