Plain truth by Jodi Picoult

About the book

Katie Fisher is Amish. For 18 years, she has grown up in a community set apart from the modern world by lifestyle and belief. It is a community fiercely protective of its way of life. To turn your back on it is to lose everything – your church, your home, and your family. So in the middle of the night when the baby comes, Katie does the only thing she knows how to do in times of stress: she prays. Exhausted, she falls asleep. When she wakes, the child is gone. Her prayer has been answered. But faith alone cannot help when the baby’s body is found.

All our members enjoyed this book – very readable, but felt the romance between Ellie Hathaway and her ex-lover was not really necessary to the plot. Led us to find out more about the Amish.

  1. Review by Cowdray Park
6 ladies enjoyed the book and 3 were disappointed with it or found it didn’t “grip” them. Most found the court scenes protracted. However, all thought the Amish way of life was an interesting subject if unreal.

  2. Review by Novel Ideas
Interesting to discover more about the Amish culture. Everyone finished it – story led us on but too many threads and contrived in parts. Ellie very unsympathetic and Katie a bit unbelievable. Sarah (mother) strong and possibly the best – Samuel another strong character.

  3. Review by Enjoying Books
Very well researched, well written book – informative about the Amish community. Clever way in which the facts were gradually given a twist in the tale right at the end.

Well researched and gave us an insight into the Amish way of life. Made us assess priorities in life, honesty and dishonesty; well written and enjoyable.

  5. Review by Bookends
The whole group enjoyed this book as a page turner. Excellent research on the religion of the Amish, legal representations, psychological influences, medical possibilities, excellent relationships and holding suspense. One or two queries regards Ellie’s swift recovery after bleeding in pregnancy.
