Libraries Week – Let’s get Digital!

7 – 12 October 2019

This year’s theme is about celebrating libraries in a digital world by getting creative, getting connected and learning new skills.

We want to show how libraries are engaging communities through technology, building digital skills, confidence, encouraging digital participation, inclusion, support, health, wellbeing & education.

What digital offers are available to library members?

  • Learning in Libraries courses: these are fantastic sessions run by tutors to teach you new skills. Some examples of digital courses that are run are: Get to know your iPad, Basic computer skills and Get to know Windows 10. If you, or someone you know may benefit from these courses, or courses on many other subjects, have a look at what your library offers through the Online Shop.
  • Your Hampshire library membership also gives you access to our computers. In some branches there are also scanning facilities and there is also printing and photocopying available.
  • BorrowBox is an amazing online service and an App that you can download on to your device. This gives you access to lots of free eBooks and eAudiobooks which you can download and read. All you need is your library card number and PIN. Find out more about BorrowBox.
  • Micro:bits are pocket-sized computers that are great to encourage kids to learn basic coding and programming that will help them in a society that is filled with technology. These can be borrowed from most Hampshire Libraries and are free! Check to see which libraries hold Micro:bits here.
  • With your library card and PIN you can renew, reserve and pay fees all from home! This makes for a more convenient way to use your library when you cannot always visit a branch. We also send out email reminders for items that are due back on your account, which ensures an easy way for you to keep track of your loans. If you need to get your account PIN number, just pop into your local branch with your library card.

Digital Readers

Digital Readers is an online reading group, completely free and open to all adults with a Hampshire Library card and a Facebook account.

Each month a new eBook will become available through the BorrowBox app. After reading the book, or while reading it, you will be able to discuss the book with other members of the group.

September’s book is still available to download through the BorrowBox app – as both an eBook and an eAudiobook! Have a look on our blog to find out which book the group has been reading: https://atomic-temporary-164578511.wpcomstaging.com/2019/08/26/digital-readers/. A new title will be announced each month on this digital group (Digital Readers Group) and through a library blog.

Even if you don’t use Facebook, you can still access the book each month through the BorrowBox app!

No Queues titles on BorrowBox

A recent edition to the BorrowBox app is a section with eBooks and eAudiobooks where there are no queues and you won’t have to reserve the books. You can download the book immediately to your device!

We also have other groups that you can join through the Hampshire Libraries Facebook page…

A Celebration of 2017 at Hampshire Libraries!

So 2017 draws to a close and at Hampshire Libraries we close our doors for the year. And what a fantastically varied and successful year we’ve had across the service and our 48 library branches! Here is just a selection of highlights from across the last 12 months…

Summer Reading Challenge 2017

The theme this year was ‘Animal Agents‘ which proved very popular relating to both animals and detective themes for our young readers. This year 26,638 children have taken part in the scheme which means that 4% more children and their families have been into our libraries and discovery centres over the summer. We also broke our record for schools visited – 84% this year which provides a platform to engage with schools and promote the scheme through school assemblies.

This year we also trialled a new way of delivering the challenge to a Special Educational Needs School which has been very successful; with 70 children completing the challenge through a combination of assemblies and story sharing. We look forward to taking the challenge to more special schools in the summer of 2018.

The Makery Spaces

Both Fareham and Fleet Libraries each contain a Makery space: a flexible digital space which has been equipped with high specification equipment. The Makery was created for technical enthusiasts and amateurs alike to learn and develop new skills and experiment with creative digital concepts in a collaborative style using: Apple iMacs running Sketch Up Pro and Adobe Creative Cloud, Apple iPads, Lego EV3 Robotics, Raspberry Pi and Crumble kits for explore coding, electronics and the world of micro computers, 3D printing, and more!

The events, classes and workshops available at the sites continues to grow and prosper, and 2018 is a real time of development so expect to see much more announced throughout!

Jane Austen 200

2017 marked 200 years since the passing of perhaps Hampshire’s most famous and celebrated author. Naturally we couldn’t resist the chance to celebrate her fantastic books and Austen’s impact on both local and literary heritage.

While there were events, talks and exhibitions throughout the county during the summer months, perhaps the most notable was Hampshire Cultural Trusts’ ‘Mysterious Miss Austen’ exhibition at Winchester Discovery Centre. Hampshire Archives and Local Studies provided a fascinating collection of Austen related artefacts, including a fake marriage entry Austen wrote as a teenager, which went on display at The Gallery at Winchester Discovery Centre from May through to July.

Winchester Discovery Centre’s 10th Birthday

The final weekend of November saw the celebration of Winchester Discovery Centre‘s 10th anniversary, a weekend bursting with activity and an opportunity to reflect on the 10 years since Winchester Library was refurbished and reopened to huge success.

The celebrations included a public open day, showcasing some of the best attractions that the building offers. From book groups to dance troupes, the Winchester Discovery Centre has been at the heart of the local community, and the staff were proud to be part of a day packed with fun and fascination. Also a ceremony for invited dignitaries celebrated the individuals and organisations which launched the Discovery Centre in 2007 and which have supported it since. For more details see our special celebratory blog.

1 Millionth eBook and eAudiobook Download

Sometime on the 16th October 2017 our service recorded its 1,000,000th download from our fantastically successful Overdrive eBooks website. While being a significant landmark, it also demonstrated the changing offer of the library service and Hampshire’s ability to lead by example for all modern library services. All indications are that no other public library service has reached this milestone so far.

DOTS iPad Lending Service

Thanks to nearly £250,000 awarded by Arts Council England, we launched Library DOTS  (Digital; Options, Training and Support), our tablet computer lending project to help tackle social isolation and improve digital literacy.

120 3G enabled tablets were made available for eligible Hampshire residents for a four week loan period, during which training is provided.

The tablets are pre-loaded with relevant online library services, and useful applications linking to themes such as health and well being and information about local communities and services.

Micro:bit Lending

Hampshire Libraries took another step into technological lending with the micro:bit lending service. This compliments the other STEM offers, such as the Code Clubs and Makery spaces.

Micro:bits are small programmable computers, designed to make learning and teaching easy and fun. Library members over the age of 11 will be able to borrow, free of charge a micro:bit pack for a loan period of 4 weeks! Micro:bit loaning packs include: one micro:bit, battery packs, USB cables and a start up leaflet. Check the library catalogue for availability.

Libraries Week

The first annual Libraries Week, following on from the tradition of a February Libraries Day, took place between 9th and 15th October 2017. This was a fantastic time to really show the sheer variety of what libraries off local communities. While events and promotions took place throughout, a huge highlight in the celebrations was the arrival of popular broadcaster and writer Gemma Cairney to Basingstoke Discovery Centre on Tuesday 10th October. Her smaert, sassy and brilliantly animated style wowed our largely youthful audience, all the while dealing with issues of huge significance with deft and humour. We only hope to have more events like this during next years’ Libraries Week!

So here it is, goodbye 2017. We’ve been amazed by the successes and inspired by the variety, so we look forward to providing an even better year in 2018. Join us!

Make:Shift:Do at The Makery Spaces!

Make:Shift:Do with the Crafts Council

On Friday 27th and Saturday 28th October we celebrated the best of what The Makery can offer: fun, creative and challenging learning experiences! These events were in partnership with the Crafts Council

We hosted a free family-oriented Crumble kit computing session at The Fareham Makery, which allowed families to work together to create a gadget from scratch using basic computing skills. We love this kind of activity, as it encourages confidence and family bonding in working together to create something original. It was fantastic to see a fully-subscribed event full of families learning together.

Many Hands:

This session used household items and recyclables to build a unique device that focused on healthy eating and well-being. Our visitors were encouraged to stretch their ideas and creativity to the weird and wonderful! With items used ranging from a multi-use kitchen tool to an egg timer, the gadgets’ humble beginnings were transformed by a combination of creativity and technical application.

The Craft Before The Code:

Crumble kits are a great resource for getting young people into developing basic computing skills but with the added skill of developing their creativity. The possibilities are limited only by the user’s imagination as to what can be made using these kits and allows them to gain useful skills whilst having fun making a unique creation.

That’s Just the Way the Coding Crumbles:

The workshops also relied on teamwork within and in between the groups and families, which added fun and social elements to the session as well as reinforce learning. And our visitors developed a real sense of achievement with a finished working gadget at the end of it.

For more images and videos of the day, see the Fareham Makery Facebook page.

Then on Saturday, we welcomed families for a ‘behind closed doors’ freestyle session at The Fleet Makery, again in partnership with the Crafts Council.

Inviting visitors to drop-in and try a full range of Makery equipment, including 3D printing, Raspberry Pi coding, demonstrations of Lego Robotics and the latest Apple technology.
Families and people of all ages were welcome to explore all the resources that The Makery has to offer and how our facility integrates the principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into a community space.

This was fantastically well attended, the open and flexible style of the sessions made it an attractive stop for passing families and regular visitors alike. Unlike the more structured sessions currently available for booking, this was more of an overview of the concept and a perfect first look at the facility.

Drawing and 3D Printing:

While both Make:Shift:Do events engaged well with our visitors, they were successful in different ways and have inspired future courses and workshops. The first to be based on feedback is the Home Education Sessions on Tuesdays at the Fareham Makery over a four-week period, beginning on Tuesday 14th November. All ticket enquiries are currently made in branch, and continued feedback and suggestions is most welcome.

See you at the next event!
